Mixed Bag From Pirates First Scrimmage Pennsauken NJ

Yesterday the PATH Academy Pirates traveled down to Pennsauken NJ to have a scrimmage with the New Jersey Broncos. More of a glorified practice than live game scrimmage each team took turns with 12 play cycles to get in work ahead of the season. These scrimmages are designed for teams to make assessments and see players in live action. It is also an opportunity for coaches to observe player reactions and communication. After the scrimmage coaches keyed on some good things as well as some definite areas of improvement that need to be made. 20 Pirates made the trip to the informal workout against a full squad from the Broncos. Coach Malave had this to say: " It was definitely a mixed bag out there today. We got a chance to see how we travel and how we perform in a foreign environment. We got off to a rough start because we didn't have everyone here on time that needed to be. This is a general issue across the semi pro world but is something we continue to work on. Before we can even get to the football stuff we have to have our guys here and ready to work. This spilled into both sides of the ball for the first 30 mins of the workout. You can't have guys playing out of position and expect to be productive. Defensively once our guys got there we did well, there are obviously some things to work out communication wise but we have a strong solid group there and we were missing a few starters. The new guys mixed in well with our returning guys and made some nice plays. Offensively we have some work to do from the trenches to the play execution. To be a successful team everyone needs to be accountable and present and that's what we are stressing moving forward. We have about a month until we kick off and that time will be used to make our adjustments and finalize our roster." With a little under a month to go the Pirates are hard at work preparing for the week 2 kickoff. Stay tuned for more information weekly from the PATH Times
